Two strands on 14-count is the classic, but the right number depends on your fabric and how full you want the stitches to look.

More or fewer strands?
- More strands give plump crosses that hide the fabric: good for bold, graphic designs and darker fabrics.
- Fewer strands let the fabric show through for a softer, vintage look, and are faster to stitch.

How do I separate floss strands without tangling?
Cut a length of about 18 in (45 cm). Hold the top, pull one strand straight up and out while the rest bunch and then relax, then repeat for each strand you need and lay them back together. Pulling strands one at a time makes them lie flatter too.
