Finished width × length. Bed sizes cover the top of the mattress with a little overhang; add 10–15 in (25–40 cm) each side for a bedspread that reaches the floor.

How much ease to add
Ease is the difference between the finished chest and the body chest. Patterns usually say which fit they are designed for.

How to take measurements
- Chest or bust: around the fullest part, under the arms, with the tape level across the back.
- Head: around the head just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead.
- Foot: around the ball of the foot, and from the back of the heel to the longest toe.
- Back waist length: from the bone at the base of the neck down to the natural waist.
- Sleeve: from the underarm to the wrist, with the arm hanging relaxed.
These charts show typical sizes. People vary a lot, so for anything fitted, measure the person you are making it for, or a garment that fits them well, and compare with the pattern's schematic.
Common questions
What size is a throw blanket?
A throw is usually about 50 × 60 in (127 × 152 cm). That is big enough to cover one adult on a sofa. For two people, go up to about 60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm).
How big should a baby blanket be?
A receiving blanket is about 36 × 36 in (91 × 91 cm). A crib blanket is about 45 × 60 in (114 × 152 cm). A stroller or car-seat blanket is smaller, about 30 × 35 in (76 × 89 cm), so it does not drag on the ground.
How much smaller should a hat be than the head?
Make a beanie about 1–2 in (2.5–5 cm) smaller around than the head. Ribbing stretches, so the hat stays on without feeling tight. Slouchy hats can be the same size as the head.
Are these body measurements or finished sizes?
The sweater, baby and child charts are body measurements. Add ease to get the finished garment size, using the ease table. The hat and sock charts also show the finished size to make.
How do I measure a foot for socks?
Measure around the widest part of the foot, across the ball. Then measure the foot length from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Knit the sock about 10% smaller around than the foot.
