How it works
- Find the stitch count on your chart: most patterns give it as width × height in stitches.
- Divide by stitches per inch: the fabric count for Aida, half the count for evenweave or linen over 2.
- Add the margin to every side for hooping and framing.
Changing fabric is an easy way to change the size of a design: the same chart on 18-count Aida is about three-quarters of its size on 14-count.
Common questions
How do I work out the size of a cross-stitch design?
Divide the stitch count by the fabric count. A design 140 stitches wide on 14-count Aida is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 in wide. On evenweave or linen worked over two threads, halve the count first: 28-count over 2 stitches the same size as 14-count Aida.
How much fabric do I need for cross-stitch?
Add a margin of about 3 in (7.5 cm) on every side of the design, so 6 in (15 cm) to each measurement. The 140 × 100 stitch example on 14-count needs about 16 × 13.1 in of fabric.
What does “over 2” mean?
On evenweave and linen, each cross is usually worked over two threads in each direction, so the stitch count per inch is half the fabric count. Working “over 1” gives tiny stitches at the full count, usually with one strand.
What size hoop do I need?
A hoop that holds the whole design needs a diameter a little bigger than the design’s diagonal. For bigger pieces, use a scroll frame or Q-snaps, or move a smaller hoop around as you stitch, taking it off when you put the work down.
