Brook Cowl
Crochet a strip as deep as you want the cowl, join the ends, and it’s done. No working in the round.
- Finished size
- 8 in / 20 cm deep × 26 in / 66 cm around
- Yarn
- About 270 yd / 250 m of DK weight (category 3) wool or wool blend yarn. Buy 2 skeins of 250 yd (this includes 10% extra).

- US G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook

- 15 sts and 14 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in half double crochet ridge. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.
Notes
- Worked flat across the depth, then the first and last rows are sewn together into a loop.
- Working into the back loop makes raised ridges that look like knitted rib and stretch nicely.
Stitch pattern: Half double crochet ridge
- Pattern row: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in the back loop only of each st across.
Cowl
- Ch 32, leaving a 24 in / 60 cm tail.
- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (30 sts).
- Row 2 onwards: Work the half double crochet ridge pattern row (see “Stitch pattern” above) on every row. Your stitch count stays the same.
- Continue until the piece measures 26 in / 66 cm from the foundation chain. Fasten off, leaving a 24 in / 60 cm tail.
Finishing
- Bring the foundation edge and the last row together without twisting the strip. Whipstitch them together through both loops. Weave in the ends.
