Dune Basket

A sturdy catchall in super-bulky t-shirt or cord yarn. The flat square base keeps it standing; the walls grow quickly.

Finished size: 10 in / 25 cm square × 8 in / 20 cm tall
Yarn: About 235 yd / 210 m of super bulky weight (category 6) t-shirt or cord yarn. Buy 4 skeins of 70 yd (this includes 10% extra).
Hook: US M/N-13 (9 mm) crochet hook
Notions: Tapestry needle with a large eye
Gauge: 8 sts and 9 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in single crochet. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.

Notes

Base gauge (single crochet): 8 sc and 9 rows = 4 in / 10 cm.
The base is always single crochet, so it’s firm and flat. The walls are worked straight up from it in joined, turned rounds, so the chosen stitch looks the same as in rows.
T-shirt yarn varies a lot in thickness. Match the gauge before you start, and buy a little extra.
Firm, dense and warm, and it holds its shape well.

Ch 21.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (20 sts).
Rows 2–23: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in each st across. Do not fasten off.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, turn the base and sc around all four edges: 1 sc in the side of each row and 1 sc in each st or chain, with no extra stitches at the corners. Join with a sl st to the first sc (86 sts).
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in the back loop only of each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. This turns the walls up from the base.
Wall rounds: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Repeat the wall rounds until the walls measure 8 in / 20 cm from Rnd 2.
Last rnd: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off.

Weave in the ends on the inside. Shape the basket by pushing out the corners and flattening the base.
