Dune Market Tote

Two panels crocheted together round three sides make a neat raised seam. Sturdy single crochet handles finish it off.

Finished size: 14¼ in / 36 cm wide × 15 in / 38 cm tall, before handles
Yarn: About 590 yd / 540 m of worsted weight (category 4) cotton or cotton blend yarn. Buy 4 skeins of 200 yd (this includes 10% extra).
Hook: US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
Notions: Tapestry needle; Pins or clips
Gauge: 15 sts and 17 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in single crochet. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.

Notes

Cotton stretches when the bag is full. Single crochet or grit stitch give the firmest bag.
Firm, dense and warm, and it holds its shape well.

Ch 54.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (53 sts).
Row 2 onwards: Work the single crochet pattern row (see “Stitch pattern” above) on every row. Your stitch count stays the same.
Continue until the panel measures 15 in / 38 cm from the foundation chain. Fasten off.

Ch 91.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (90 sts).
Rows 2–4: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in each st across. Fasten off, leaving a 12 in / 30 cm tail.

Join: Place the panels together with the wrong sides facing and the foundation edges at the bottom, and hold them with pins or clips. Join the yarn at one top corner. Working through both panels, sc evenly down the first side, along the bottom (3 sc in each corner) and up the second side. Fasten off. Leave the top open.
Handles: Sew both ends of one handle to the inside of the front, 1½ in / 4 cm below the top edge and 3 in / 7.5 cm in from each side. Sew the second handle to the back to match.
Weave in the ends.
