Field Baby Blanket

Worked flat in one piece with a two-round border to square the edges. Choose the stitch for the texture you like.

Finished size: 32 × 40 in (81 × 102 cm)
Yarn: About 1,900 yd / 1,750 m of DK weight (category 3) machine-washable wool, cotton or a soft acrylic blend yarn. Buy 9 skeins of 250 yd (this includes 10% extra).
Hook: US G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook

Gauge: 17 sts and 19 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in grit stitch. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.

Choose a machine-washable yarn for a baby blanket.
Each (sc, dc) pair goes into the sc of the pair below, skipping the dc. Dense and textured; the stitch count never changes.

Worked over a multiple of 2 sts.

Pattern row: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in first st, *skip next st, (sc, dc) in next st; rep from * to last st, sc in last st.

Ch 133.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (132 sts).
Row 2 onwards: Work the grit stitch pattern row (see “Stitch pattern” above) on every row. Your stitch count stays the same.
Continue until the blanket measures 39 in / 99 cm from the foundation chain. Do not fasten off.

Border rnd 1: Ch 1, turn the work to the side edge and sc evenly around all four sides: 1 sc in each st along the top and bottom, 1 sc in the side of each row along the sides, and 3 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Border rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the centre sc of each corner. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off.

Weave in the ends. Wash and lay flat to dry, patting it to 32 × 40 in (81 × 102 cm).
