Fold Dishcloth
A square of cotton in your favourite stitch. Quick to make, and a good way to practise a new one.

- 9¼ × 9¼ in (23 × 23 cm)
- Yarn
- About 105 yd / 95 m of worsted weight (category 4) 100% cotton yarn. Buy 1 skein of 200 yd (this includes 10% extra).
- Hook
- US H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook

- Gauge
- 14 sts and 16 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in grit stitch. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.
Notes
- Cotton is absorbent, washes hot and doesn’t felt.
- Each (sc, dc) pair goes into the sc of the pair below, skipping the dc. Dense and textured; the stitch count never changes.
Stitch pattern: Grit stitch
Worked over a multiple of 2 sts.
- Pattern row: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), turn, sc in first st, *skip next st, (sc, dc) in next st; rep from * to last st, sc in last st.
Cloth
- Ch 33.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (32 sts).
- Row 2 onwards: Work the grit stitch pattern row (see “Stitch pattern” above) on every row. Your stitch count stays the same.
- Continue until the cloth is square: 9¼ in / 23 cm from the foundation chain. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends securely, since the cloth will be washed often.
