Fold Headband
Crochet a narrow strip and join the ends. The ridge stitch gives a stretchy, ribbed band that stays put.

- Finished size
- 3½ in / 9 cm wide × 21 in / 53 cm around
- Fit
- Fits a head of about 22–23 in
- Yarn
- About 95 yd / 85 m of DK weight (category 3) wool or wool blend yarn. Buy 1 skein of 250 yd (this includes 10% extra).
- Hook
- US G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook
- Notions
- Tapestry needle
- Gauge
- 15 sts and 14 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in half double crochet ridge. Swatch first and change hook size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.
Notes
- Worked flat across the width, then seamed into a loop. The band is 1–2 in / 2.5–5 cm smaller than the head.
- Working into the back loop makes raised ridges that look like knitted rib and stretch nicely.
Stitch pattern: Half double crochet ridge
- Pattern row: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in the back loop only of each st across.
Band
- Ch 15.
- Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across (13 sts).
- Row 2 onwards: Work the half double crochet ridge pattern row (see “Stitch pattern” above) on every row. Your stitch count stays the same.
- Continue until the band measures 21 in / 53 cm from the foundation chain. Fasten off, leaving a 12 in / 30 cm tail.
Finishing
- Bring the foundation edge and the last row together without twisting the band. Whipstitch them together. Weave in the ends.
