Hill Baby Blanket

A soft DK blanket worked in one piece. The garter border is knitted as you go, so there’s nothing to pick up or sew.

Finished size: 32¼ × 40 in (82 × 102 cm)
Yarn: About 1,550 yd / 1,400 m of DK weight (category 3) machine-washable wool, cotton or a soft acrylic blend yarn. Buy 7 skeins of 250 yd (this includes 10% extra).
Needles: US 6 (4 mm) circular needle, 32 in / 80 cm long (worked back and forth)

Gauge: 22 sts and 38 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in seed stitch. Swatch first and change needle size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.

Notes

The circular needle only holds the many stitches: turn at the end of every row as with straight needles.
The first and last 5 stitches of every row, and 8 rows at each end, are garter stitch so the edges lie flat.
Choose a machine-washable yarn for a baby blanket.
A pebbly texture that looks the same on both sides and lies flat.

Worked over a multiple of 2 sts plus 1.

Cast on 177 sts.
Rows 1–8: Knit (garter border).
Every following row: K5, work the next row of the stitch pattern over the centre 167 sts, k5. Start with Row 1 of the stitch pattern on the first right-side row.
Continue until the piece measures 39¼ in / 100 cm from the cast-on edge, ending after a wrong-side row.
Next 8 rows: Knit (garter border).
Bind off loosely knitwise.

Weave in the ends. Wash and lay flat to dry, patting it to 32¼ × 40 in (82 × 102 cm).
