Hill Throw
The grown-up sibling of the Hill Baby Blanket: worsted yarn, a generous size and a garter border knitted as you go.

- Finished size
- 47½ × 60 in (121 × 152 cm)
- Yarn
- About 2,800 yd / 2,550 m of worsted weight (category 4) wool, wool blend or acrylic yarn. Buy 16 skeins of 200 yd (this includes 10% extra).
- Needles
- US 8 (5 mm) circular needle, 40 in / 100 cm long (worked back and forth)
- Notions
- Tapestry needle
- Gauge
- 18 sts and 26 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in basket texture. Swatch first and change needle size if needed: more stitches than this means go up a size, fewer means go down.
Notes
- The circular needle only holds the many stitches: turn at the end of every row as with straight needles.
- The first and last 5 stitches of every row, and 8 rows at each end, are garter stitch so the edges lie flat.
- A throw is heavy on the needles. Rest the work in your lap as it grows.
- Blocks of knit and purl that swap every 4 rows, like a woven basket.
Stitch pattern: Basket texture
Worked over a multiple of 8 sts plus 4.
- Rows 1 and 3 (RS): K4, *p4, k4; rep from * to end.
- Rows 2 and 4 (WS): P4, *k4, p4; rep from * to end.
- Rows 5 and 7: P4, *k4, p4; rep from * to end.
- Rows 6 and 8: K4, *p4, k4; rep from * to end.
Throw
- Cast on 214 sts.
- Rows 1–8: Knit (garter border).
- Every following row: K5, work the next row of the stitch pattern over the centre 204 sts, k5. Start with Row 1 of the stitch pattern on the first right-side row.
- Continue until the piece measures 59 in / 150 cm from the cast-on edge, ending after a wrong-side row.
- Next 8 rows: Knit (garter border).
- Bind off loosely knitwise.
Finishing
- Weave in the ends. Wash and lay flat to dry.
