Fold-Brim Watch Cap
Rib from brim to crown with a deep fold-up cuff. A reversible classic with a crown that decreases in the rib.
- Yarn
- DK (3) wool; springy wool keeps the rib elastic.
- Needles
- US 5 (3.75 mm) 16 in (40 cm) circular and DPNs
- Sizes
- Any size from preemie to adult large. Use the Finished hat and Height columns of the hat size chart. Add 3 in (7.5 cm) height for the fold. Example: adult medium.
- Example gauge
- 28 sts and 32 rnds = 4 in (10 cm) in 2×2 rib, relaxed (not stretched)

- About 290 yd (265 m) DK for adult medium with fold (rib uses about 15% more).

Gauge swatch
Rib swatch, measured relaxed. Rib hugs, so a 20.5 in rib hat fits a 22 in head.
Instructions
Rib
Cast on (example: 148 sts). Join. Every rnd: *K2, p2; rep from * to end. Work until the “start crown at” height.
Crown
Rnd 1: *K2, p2tog; rep from * to end. (k2, p1 rib)
Rnds 2–3: *K2, p1; rep from * to end.
Rnd 4: *K2tog, p1; rep from * to end. (k1, p1 rib)
Rnds 5–6: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Rnd 7: *K2tog; rep from * to end.
Rnd 8: *K2tog; rep from * to end, ending k1 if a stitch is left.
Finishing
- Draw yarn through remaining sts twice and fasten off.
- Weave in ends on the outside of the fold section so they hide when folded.
Designer’s notes
- This crown works on any multiple of 4, so it fits every size and yarn weight.
- Shorter fold (1.5 in) makes a fisherman beanie that sits above the ears.
