From a baby blanket to a king, with squares from 4 to 12 in. For example, a throw with 6 in squares takes 80 squares.

Adjusting for borders and joins
- Border: take the border width off each side first. A 2 in border on a 50 × 60 in throw leaves 46 × 56 in for squares.
- Join-as-you-go or slip stitch: adds almost nothing, so you may fit one more square across on big blankets.
- Close to a size? Round towards the shape you want: an extra row of squares makes it longer, an extra column wider.

Common questions
How many 6 inch squares for a throw blanket?
A 50 × 60 in throw takes 8 × 10 = 80 squares of 6 in, joined with single crochet. Add a border and you may need a row or column fewer.
How many squares for a queen size blanket?
A 90 × 100 in queen blanket takes 11 × 12 = 132 squares of 8 in. Bigger squares keep the count (and the joining) manageable on large blankets.
What are standard blanket sizes?
Common sizes: baby 30 × 35 in, crib 45 × 60 in, throw 50 × 60 in, twin 66 × 90 in, full 80 × 90 in, queen 90 × 100 in and king 108 × 100 in. Blankets for a bed usually hang over the sides, so they are wider than the mattress.
