Sideways Rib Fold-Brim Beanie
Rows of hdc in the back loop make a knit-look rib. Work a flat rectangle, seam it, gather the top.
- Yarn
- Worsted (4) wool or wool blend.

- H-8 (5 mm)
- Sizes
- Any size from preemie to adult large. Use the Finished hat and Height columns of the hat size chart. Example: adult medium plus a 3 in (7.5 cm) fold.
- Example gauge
- 13 sts and 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in hdc back loop only
- Yarn needed
- About 230 yd (210 m) worsted for adult medium with fold.

Gauge swatch
Work a small rib swatch. Measure rows relaxed; the rib stretches around the head.
Instructions
Rib rectangle
Ch (sts + 2) (example: 39). Row 1: Hdc (UK htr) in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across (37).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in the back loop only of each st across.
Repeat row 2 until you have your row count (example: 58).
Seam
Fold so the first and last rows meet. Sl st (UK ss) them together through both layers. Turn right side out.
Finishing
- Thread yarn through the row ends along the top edge, pull tight to gather and fasten off securely.
- Weave in ends. Fold the brim up.
Designer’s notes
- Smoother crown: on every row, work the last 6 sts at the crown end in sc (UK dc) instead of hdc.
- Slouchy version: add 2 in to the stitch count (about 7 more sts: ch 46) and skip the fold.
