Asymmetric Stripe Shawl
A long, shallow triangle worked sideways from one tip. One increase every third ridge gives a shape that wraps and stays put.
- Yarn
- Worsted (4) in 2 colours, A and B.
- Needles
- US 8 (5 mm) 24 in (60 cm) circular
- Sizes
- 60 in (152 cm) along the straight (neck) edge, about 20 in (51 cm) deep at the widest end
- Example gauge
- 18 sts and 36 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in garter
- Yarn needed
- About 650 yd (600 m) worsted, split between two colours. Use “Custom rectangle” 30 × 21 in and “Garter or ribbing”.

Instructions
Tip
With A, cast on 3 sts.
Body
Row 1 (RS): Knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. 1 st increased.
Rows 2–6: Knit.
Repeat rows 1–6. The increase edge becomes the long lower edge; the straight edge sits at your neck.
Stripe plan: 6 ridges A, 3 ridges B, and repeat. Change colour at the start of a RS row and carry the unused colour up the straight edge.
Stop when the straight edge measures 60 in (152 cm).
Bind off
Bind off loosely.
Finishing
- Block into a long triangle, pinning the straight edge straight.
- Weave in ends.
Designer’s notes
- Make it deeper by increasing every second ridge (rows 1–4 repeat): depth ≈ half the length.
- Make it narrower by increasing every fourth ridge: depth ≈ a quarter of the length.
