Garter Rectangle Slippers
Each slipper is one garter rectangle, folded and seamed. If you can knit a scarf, you can make these.
- Yarn
- Bulky (5) wool, or two strands of worsted held together.
- Needles
- US 10.5 (6.5 mm)
- Sizes
- Any foot. Uses “foot length” and “foot around” from the sock chart. Example: women’s M, foot 9.5 × 8 in (24 × 20 cm).
- Example gauge
- 14 sts and 28 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in garter
- Yarn needed
- About 100 yd (90 m) bulky for a pair.

Gauge swatch
Garter swatch. The fabric should be firm; go down a size if it’s floppy.
Instructions
Rectangle
Cast on (example: 33 sts). Knit every row for the rectangle height (example: 50 rows). Bind off, leaving a 24 in tail.
Toe
Thread the tail through the ends of the rows along one short side and pull tight to gather the toe. Secure.
Top seam
Fold the rectangle so the cast-on and bind-off edges meet. Seam them together from the toe for one-third of the length (example: 11 sts). The rest stays open for the foot.
Heel
Fold the other short side in half and seam it down the middle to form the heel.
Finishing
- Weave in ends.
- Add non-slip dots to the sole, or a felt sole, for hard floors.
Designer’s notes
- Knit the sole half (first half of the rows) in one colour and the top in another for a two-tone slipper.
- Child size: 6.5 × 3.5 ≈ 23 sts; height 6.5 × 0.9 × 7 ≈ 41 → 42 rows.
