Cropped Granny Square Vest
Ten big granny squares make a cropped vest. The square size is set by your chest measurement.
- Yarn
- Worsted (4) in 3–5 colours plus a border colour.
- Hook
- H-8 (5 mm)
- Sizes
- Any size. Example: bust 37 in, finished 40 in (102 cm).
- Example gauge
- One 7-round granny square = 7.6 in (19.5 cm)
- Yarn needed
- About 700 yd (640 m) worsted.

Instructions
Squares
Make 10 granny squares to your size (see the Classic Granny Square Blanket).
Assemble
Back: join 3 × 2. Fronts: join 2 squares vertically for each.
Shoulders: join the top edge of each front to the top edge of the back’s outer top square. The back’s centre top square is the back neck.
Sides: join the side edges of the lower squares only. The upper squares stay open for the armholes.
Borders
Border colour: 3 rounds of hdc (UK htr) around the fronts, neck and hem (3 hdc in outer corners, hdc2tog (UK htr2tog) at inner corners). 2 rounds of sc (UK dc) around each armhole.
Finishing
- Optional ties: two 10 in chains at the lower front corners.
- Weave in ends and block.
Designer’s notes
- Longer vest: add a third row of squares (5 more).
- The 2 in front gap closes with the borders; add more border rounds for overlap.
