Basketweave Crib Blanket
Alternating blocks of knit and purl with a garter frame. Only knit and purl stitches, but it looks woven.
- Yarn
- Worsted (4) machine-washable wool or cotton blend.
- Needles
- US 8 (5 mm) 32 in (80 cm) circular
- Sizes
- Crib 45 × 60 in (114 × 152 cm)
- Example gauge
- 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in basketweave
- Yarn needed
- About 2,800 yd (2,550 m) worsted. Choose “Garter or ribbing” in the calculator as the closest texture.
- Stitch multiple
- 10 + 5, plus 3 garter stitches each side

- 2 stitch markers
Gauge swatch
Cast on 25 sts (2 repeats + 5) and work rows 1–12 twice. Block, then measure across the blocks.
Instructions
Bottom border
Cast on (example: 201 sts). Knit 8 rows (4 ridges).
Set up
Next row (RS): K3, place marker, work to last 3 sts, place marker, k3. Keep the 3 sts outside the markers in garter (knit every row) throughout.
Basketweave (between markers)
Rows 1, 3, 5 (RS): *K5, p5; rep from * to last 5 sts before marker, k5.
Rows 2, 4, 6 (WS): *P5, k5; rep from * to last 5 sts before marker, p5.
Rows 7, 9, 11 (RS): *P5, k5; rep from * to last 5 sts before marker, p5.
Rows 8, 10, 12 (WS): *K5, p5; rep from * to last 5 sts before marker, k5.
Repeat rows 1–12 until the blanket measures 59 in (150 cm), ending after row 6 or 12.
Top border
Knit 7 rows. Bind off knitwise on the wrong side.
Finishing
- Weave in ends.
- Block firmly; basketweave relaxes and squares up nicely.
Designer’s notes
- Blocks look best when roughly square. If yours look tall, work 5 rows per block (10-row repeat) instead of 6.
- Change the block size to 4 or 6 sts by changing the multiple to 8 + 4 or 12 + 6.
