Round Cotton Coasters
Four rounds of dc and a crab-stitch edge. The quickest way to learn working in the round.
- Yarn
- Worsted (4) 100% cotton; one colour per coaster or stripes.
- Hook
- G-6 (4 mm)
- Sizes
- 4.5 in (11.5 cm) across

- 12 sts and 7 rnds = 4 in (10 cm) in dc
- Yarn needed
- About 25 yd (23 m) cotton per coaster.

Instructions
Coaster
Join every round with a sl st (UK ss) to the first st; the ch at the start of each round does not count as a stitch.
Rnd 1: Magic ring. Ch 2, 12 dc (UK tr) in ring. (12)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st. (24)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next; rep from *. (36)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next; rep from *. (48)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, reverse sc (UK reverse dc), also called crab stitch, in each st. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in ends.
- Steam flat.
Designer’s notes
- Flat-circle rule: increases per round ≈ 6.28 × (sts per in ÷ rows per in). With typical gauges that comes to about 6 for sc, 8 for hdc (UK htr) and 12 for dc. If your circle ruffles, increase less often; if it cups, more often.
- Keep going to 8 rounds for a trivet (96 sts).
