Gauge swatch
Work the first 3 rounds and check they lie flat.
Instructions
Circle
Join every round with a sl st (UK ss) to the first st; the ch at the start of each round does not count as a stitch.
Rnd 1: Magic ring. Ch 2, 12 dc (UK tr) in ring. Rnd 2: 2 dc in each (24).
Rnds 3–16: Ch 2, *dc in each st of the section except the last, 2 dc in the last st; rep from * around (12 sections, 12 sts increased), except on rnds 8 and 14: ch 2, dc in each st around with no increases. (Last rnd: 168 sts)
Stagger the increase position every round so the rug stays round.
Lay it flat every 3 rounds. Ruffling: work 1 round with no increases. Cupping: add 2–4 extra increases.
Edge
Work 1 round of sc (UK dc). Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in ends deeply.
- Use a non-slip backing on hard floors.
Designer’s notes
- Flat-circle rule: increases per round ≈ 6.28 × (sts per in ÷ rows per in). With typical gauges that comes to about 6 for sc, 8 for hdc (UK htr) and 12 for dc. If your circle ruffles, increase less often; if it cups, more often.
- Three strands of worsted in slightly different colours makes a tweedy rug from stash.
