Do the math

The examples use the gauge above. Put your own swatch into the gauge calculator first, then use your numbers in each formula.

Materials

  • Bulky (5) yarn (see yarn needed)
  • J-10 (6 mm)
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge swatch

Sc swatch; it should be firm.

Instructions

  1. Toe

Work in a spiral with a marker. Rnd 1: 7 sc (UK dc) in magic ring (or 6 for a multiple of 6). Rnd 2: 2 sc in each (14). Rnd 3: *Sc in next, 2 sc in next; rep from * around (21). Stop at your stitch count; for bigger sizes keep adding 7 (or 6) sts a round, with 1 more sc before each increase each time.

  2. Foot

Sc in each st around until the slipper measures the tube length from the toe tip.

  3. Sides and heel

Work flat from here over ⅔ of the sts (example: 14), leaving the rest as the instep opening.

Every row: Ch 1, turn, sc in each of the 14 sts (your ⅔). Repeat until the slipper reaches the full foot length.

Finishing

  • Fold the last row in half and sl st (UK ss) the two halves together to close the heel.
  • Work 1 round of sc around the opening. Weave in ends.

Designer’s notes

  • Add a non-slip sole for hard floors.
  • Child sizes: foot 6.5 × 0.95 × 2.75 = 17 → 18 sts (6-st start, 3 toe rounds); heel over 12 sts.

Counter set-up
