Do the math

The examples use the gauge above. Put your own swatch into the gauge calculator first, then use your numbers in each formula.

Materials

  • Worsted (4) yarn (see yarn needed)
  • Tunisian (afghan) hook K-10.5 (6.5 mm), at least 10 in long
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge swatch

Ch 16, work 12 rows. Tunisian fabric curls; measure after blocking.

Instructions

  1. Foundation

    Ch (example: 28).

Forward pass: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop; pull up a loop in each ch across. Keep all loops on the hook (28).

Return pass: Yo, pull through 1 loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * until 1 loop remains.

  2. Tunisian simple stitch

Forward pass: Skip the first vertical bar. *Insert hook from right to left under the next vertical bar, yo, pull up a loop; rep from * to the last bar. Insert under both loops of the last bar, pull up a loop.

    Return pass: As before.

Repeat to the length you want.

  3. Bind off

*Insert hook under the next vertical bar, yo, pull through the bar and the loop on the hook (sl st (UK ss)); rep from * across. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Work 1 row of sc (UK dc) along each long edge to tame the curl.
  • Wet block flat.

Designer’s notes

  • Tunisian curls towards the front. A hook 2 sizes bigger than the yarn band suggests helps.
  • Carry a second colour and change every 2 rows for stripes.
