Granny Triangle Shawl
Granny clusters worked from the neck point downwards. Each row adds a cluster at every edge, so you can stop at any size.
- Yarn
- DK (3), a gradient cake or 3–5 colours.
- Hook
- H-8 (5 mm): a size up from usual for drape

- Wingspan 60 in (152 cm), depth 30 in (76 cm)

- 16 sts and 9 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in granny clusters
- Yarn needed
- About 1,000 yd (915 m) DK. In the calculator use “Custom rectangle” with half the area (30 × 30 in) and “Lace/openwork”.

Work 10 rows and measure the depth from the top edge to the point, blocked.
Instructions
Start
Row 1: Ch 4, sl st (UK ss) to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc (UK tr)), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, 3 dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Grow
Every row: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first st, 3 dc in each gap between clusters to the point, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the point sp, 3 dc in each gap to the end, 3 dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Change colour every 2–4 rows, or let a gradient do the work.
Stop at the depth you want or when about 10% of the yarn is left.
Edge
Along the two lower edges of the last row (the edges that meet at the point): sc (UK dc) in first st, *sk (UK miss) 2 sts, 5 dc in next, sk 2 sts, sc in next; rep from * to the point, 5 dc in the ch-2 point sp, then work the second edge the same way. Fasten off.
The shells fit best when each edge has a multiple of 6 + 1 sts; fudge by skipping 1 or 3 sts instead of 2 once or twice.
Finishing
- Block to a triangle, pinning the point and the two top corners.
- Weave in ends after blocking.
Designer’s notes
- Each row uses more yarn than the last. Weigh the ball when you think you’re close.
- Make it a kerchief in worsted: stop at 12 in deep.
