Mitered Square Blanket

Garter squares that decrease to a point, joined as you knit. Each square is a short, satisfying project.

Yarn: Worsted (4). Self-striping or variegated yarn makes each square stripe on the diagonal.
Needles: US 8 (5 mm) straight or circular
Sizes: Throw 48 × 60 in (122 × 152 cm): 8 squares × 10 squares of 6 in (15 cm)
Example gauge: 18 sts and 36 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in garter
Yarn needed: About 3,000 yd (2,750 m) worsted: each 6 in square uses about 37 yd.

Knit one test square from the recipe below. If it measures 6 in on each side, your gauge is right.

First square
Cast on the square count (example: 55 sts). Mark the centre stitch (example: stitch 28).
Row 1 (WS): Knit.
Row 2 (RS): Knit to 1 st before the centre stitch, s2kp (slip 2 together knitwise, k1, pass the 2 slipped sts over), knit to end. 2 sts decreased.
Repeat rows 1–2 until 3 sts remain, ending with a WS row. Next row: s2kp. Fasten off.
Rest of the first strip
Squares 2–8: cast on the per-side count + 1 (example: 28 sts), then with the RS facing pick up and knit the per-side count (example: 27) along the right edge of the previous square. Work as for the first square.
Later strips
First square of each strip: pick up the per-side count along the top of the square below, then cast on per-side + 1.
Other squares: pick up per-side along the left neighbour, 1 st in the corner, per-side along the square below (example: 27 + 1 + 27 = 55).

Weave in ends as you go, one square at a time.
Optional garter border: pick up 1 st per ridge / per stitch all round and knit 8 rounds of garter, increasing at the corners.

Change the square size to 4 in and you get 18 sts per side / 37 to cast on (4 × 4.5 = 18).
Always pick up with the RS facing so the pick-up ridge lands on the back.
